The traineeship program is looking for open-minded and critical-thinking individuals with a background in journalism, or who are passionate about switching to journalism from law, economics, science or technology/IT.
The 18-month paid journalism program is considered one of the most prestigious of its kind in Germany – and beyond. It covers a range of fields and skills, such as TV-moderation, multimedia storytelling, data journalism and working with AI-tools. Trainees can earn up to 2,273 euros per month during the traineeship.

Deutsche Welle International Traineeship 2026 | Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the Deutsche Welle International Journalism Traineeship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must have completed a university/college degree, an apprenticeship or have graduated from a journalism school prior to the start of the traineeship. All applicants are required to include certificates of their qualifications (in digital form).
- Applicants must possess language proficiency in German or English.
- Trainees who have experience in journalism are welcomed to apply. However, applicants from other fields, whether you are an IT specialist, lawyer, physician, mathematician, nurse, chef, pilot, and footballer can also apply as long as they have a keen interest in journalism.
Application Procedures
How-to-Apply: Interested applicants for the Deutsche Welle International Traineeship are to fill an online application including work samples via the online application system. It is important that the work samples are in one of the DW program languages. You are also welcome to upload the work samples in different languages, if they belong to the DW program languages.
Document Requirements:
- Letter of motivation only in German or English (max. 700 words, font: Arial, font size: 10, spacing: 1,5, date and signature).
- Your current CV (please provide two CVs: one using Europass and one in a freely chosen format .)
- University diploma or training certificate(s)
- Samples of your work (max. 3) – you can upload your work samples in one (or more) format(s) of your choice (video, audio, text, social media posts).
- For non-EU citizens who are currently living in an EU country: a copy of your passport, as well as your residency permit
If available:
- Proof of your language skills according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
- Internship certificate
- Employment references
- Letter of recommendation (with letterhead, stamp of the organization, signature and date)
